FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRADITIONAL BARN DANCE AT HALLOCKVILLE

On Saturday, October 18, the Hallockville Museum Farm will host its second traditional dance barn at is recently restored Naugles Barn. Like the much-enjoyed dance at the gala opening for the Naugles Barn in June, this event will also feature Chart Guthrie calling to live music by the four-member band “Dance All Night.” The public is invited to join in this lively evening of fiddle playing, dancing and socializing. The dances will be appropriate for all ages and no prior experience is needed. Everyone is encouraged to join in. There is no need to come with a partner, just promenade on in and join in the fun! Barn-appropriate attire suggested.

Picnic food from the grill and wine from Martha Clara Vineyards will be available for purchase. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with food and tours both the early 20th century Naugles barn and of Hallockville’s 18th and 19th century Homestead Barn. Music and dancing will start at 7:30 pm.

Members of the NYS Barn Coalition, will be Hallockville’ special guests at the event. The Coalition’s annual convention is taking place in Riverhead that weekend, its first-ever meeting on Long Island.

The Naugles Barn is a large traditional “English” style barn with central thrashing floor flanked by capacious hay lofts on either side and a high gambrel roof. It was built about 1938 to replace an earlier barn that burned in “one of the most spectacular fires of the summer.” The Polish-Lithuanian Naugles family arrived in America in the late 19th century and quickly became successful farmers with over 100 acres of land. They were also part of a local bootlegging operation during Prohibition, and may have utilized some of the proceeds to build this fine barn. The barn originally stood about 1,000 feet to the west on the KeySpan property until they donated the barn to Hallockville, which moved it to its present site in 2000.

Tickets are $18 for the general public and $15 for members of the Hallockville Museum, the NYS Barn Coalition or the Long Island Antique Power Association. Hallockville is located at 6038 Sound Avenue in Riverhead and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm. For more information, please call the Hallockville office at 298-5292 or Richard Wines at 722-5170. Hallockville Museum Farm & Folklife Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Riverhead Town landmark. Events are supported in part by NYSCA’s Folk Arts Program and by Suffolk County under the auspices of the Office of Cultural Affairs.
